Honeywell AlarmNet & UPLINK 1500 Update
October, 2006
This update is to inform you of developments regarding the AMPS cellular network in the United States.
Background
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has established February 18, 2008, as the date after
which cellular carriers may choose to discontinue support of analog wireless networks known as AMPS
(Advanced Mobile Phone Services). Referred to as the “Sunset Clause,” it ensures that carriers provide
existing services up until that date.
Since this technology is used by our AlarmNet-C & UPLINK 1500 service, we want to explain what this
means and describe our plans are for using digital wireless networks with GSM technology. GSM
(Global System for Mobile Communications) is the most popular standard for mobile telephones in the world.
What It Means
Cellular carriers may choose to maintain support of the AMPS service beyond February 18, 2008. It does
not mean that cellular carriers must drop support after this date. Due to the use of the AMPS network in
the security industry coupled with other industries that also utilize this network, it is possible that the
services will continue beyond the Sunset Clause date. This decision is solely at the discretion of the
cellular carrier. AlarmNet, Uplink, and our customers are potential casualties of the FCC’s Sunset
Clause and the decisions carriers make regarding whether or not to discontinue AMPS service.
